Prescribing by pharmacists
The
role of pharmacists has been expanded to
include
prescribing of drugs beyond emergency
contraception or within a
hospital setting. Effective
April 1, 2007, Alberta pharmacists on the clinical register (a new
registration category under
Alberta’s Health
Professionals Act)
became eligible to prescribe
certain drugs in some circumstances, based on having met
specific criteria. Great-West adjudicates any drug
claim in which the drug was prescribed by a pharmacist
in the same manner as a claim in which the drug was prescribed by a
physician or dentist.
